This Sunday, St. Martin's will be celebrating the First Sunday in Advent with a special service.
The Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols originated in the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge in 1934. It is based on the immensely popular Christmas service of 9 lessons and carols which Dean Eric Milner-White had adapted for use at King’s in 1918 from a 19th century source in Truro Cathedral, Cornwall. The purpose of the Advent Service, he wrote, was "not to celebrate Christmas, but to expect it."
In the service, readings from scripture are interspersed with carols sung by the choir and hymns sung by the congregation. The appointed lessons from scripture recount God's act of creation, humanity's fall, and God's promise of a Messiah, presented in a flowing format that allows the scriptures and songs to speak for themselves.
Why not come to St. Martin's this first Sunday in Advent? This service is a wonderful way to begin the season of preparation for Christmas.
